Agitator Mechanical Seal

Mechanical seals for agitators (agitator mechanical seal) seal the agitator shaft in reaction tanks, mixing tanks, and storage tanks. This is a more challenging application than pumps due to the long shaft, many vibrations, and often working under pressure or vacuum.

Characteristics of agitators

Agitators are typically installed vertically, with a long shaft, making them prone to eccentricity and shaft deflection. The seal must compensate for this eccentricity without increasing wear. Unlike pumps, there is no circulating fluid through the seal, so cooling and lubrication must be designed separately.

Common configurations

  • Single seal: used for non-hazardous media and low pressure.
  • Double seal with liquid barrier (Plan 52 or 53): used for hazardous or flammable media.
  • Double dry-running seal using nitrogen barrier gas: avoids using barrier liquid and limits product contamination.

Eccentricity-resistant design

Cartridge-type seals with integrated bearings help maintain the seal face in position despite shaft vibration. The design of the static part compensates for eccentricity and the wide clearance around the shaft allows the seal to operate stably. The cartridge type also shortens installation time.

Cleaning and material requirements

In pharmaceutical and food applications, seals require materials that meet product contact standards, easy-to-clean surfaces, and resistance to cleaning in place (CIP) and steam sterilization (SIP). In chemical applications, 316L stainless steel or alloys are often used, with silicon carbide and carbon seal faces, and FFKM or PTFE gaskets.

Operating notes

  • Maintain the barrier fluid pressure higher than the tank pressure.
  • Avoid running the seal dry when using liquid-lubricated types.
  • Monitor vibration and temperature in the seal area.

Applications

Reaction tanks, mixing tanks, and storage tanks in the chemical, pharmaceutical, food, paint, and polymer industries.
