Carbon Ring Seal

Carbon ring seal (phớt vòng carbon) is a segmented seal made of carbon material, used to seal high-speed shafts at high temperatures with low leakage. This type of seal is widely used in turbines, centrifugal compressors, and as a separator seal.

Structure and principle

Each ring consists of multiple carbon segments assembled together, held tightly around the shaft by a spring ring. The gap between the ring and the shaft is very small, limiting the escape of gas or vapor along the shaft. The ring can float according to the shaft's eccentricity.

Advantages

  • Can withstand high temperatures and large speeds.
  • Simple structure, durable and easy to replace.
  • Stable operation with gas, vapor, and some media.
  • Gradual wear, easy to monitor.

Materials and shaft

The ring is usually made of graphite carbon impregnated with additives to increase strength and wear resistance. The shaft part in contact needs to be surface-hardened to withstand wear and maintain suitable roughness.

Applications

  • Steam turbines and gas turbines.
  • Centrifugal compressors, especially as separator seals to protect bearings from leaked gas and oil.
  • High-speed rotating equipment in power plants and petrochemical refineries.

Comparison with dry gas seals

Carbon ring seals have higher leakage than dry gas seals, so they are often used in separator positions or in equipment that does not require extremely low leakage. Dry gas seals are suitable when strict emission control is required.

Maintenance

Monitor the amount of leaked gas and the temperature around the seal, inspect the wear of the ring and shaft periodically, and replace the ring when the gap exceeds the manufacturer's limit.
