Seal Auxiliary Systems for Pumps

Seal auxiliary systems for pumps provide, cool and maintain the barrier or buffer fluid for mechanical seals. A good seal but a poor auxiliary system can still fail prematurely, so this is an indispensable part.

What auxiliary systems do

The system creates a stable working environment for the seal: keeping the barrier fluid at the correct pressure and temperature, circulating to dissipate heat and monitoring the condition. The configurations are standardized into diagrams (piping plan) in API 682.

Common diagrams

  • Plan 52: unpressurized buffer fluid reservoir for unpressurized double seals.
  • Plan 53A: pressurized reservoir, circulation by pump internal bypass.
  • Plan 53B: diaphragm accumulator, pressure by nitrogen gas.
  • Plan 53C: piston accumulator, pressure follows pump pressure.
  • Plan 54: pressurized barrier fluid supply from an external system.

Main components

Reservoir or accumulator, air or water cooler, pressure and temperature gauges and sensors, level switches and alarm switches, piping and valves, and nitrogen gas source when needed. All are usually mounted on a single frame for easy transportation and installation.

Choosing barrier fluid

The barrier fluid must be compatible with the medium, not precipitate or evaporate under working conditions and suitable for the ambient temperature. Water, glycol mixture and synthetic oil are common choices.

Monitoring and maintenance

  • Monitor the fluid level to detect leakage in the inner or outer seal.
  • Monitor the pressure to ensure the barrier pressure is higher than the pump pressure.
  • Monitor the temperature to warn of seal face overheating.
  • Supplement the fluid and check periodically.
