Mechanical Seals for Pumps

Mechanical seals for pumps (mechanical seal) are the most common shaft sealing solution in industrial centrifugal pumps. The seal helps prevent liquid leakage into the environment, reduces product loss, limits shaft wear, and ensures plant safety. Compared to gland packing, mechanical seals have much lower leakage, consume less power, and require less maintenance.

Operating principle of mechanical seals

The seal consists of a rotating sealing face and a stationary sealing face attached to the pump body. The two faces are pressed against each other by a spring or a bellows, with a very thin liquid film in between that lubricates and seals. The flatness of the seal face and the quality of the liquid film directly determine the lifespan of the seal.

Common types of mechanical seals for pumps

  • Single seal: simple structure, low cost, suitable for non-toxic liquids.
  • Double seal: has a barrier or buffer liquid between the two seals, used for hazardous, flammable, or solid-containing media.
  • Cartridge seal: pre-assembled into a unit, reduces installation errors and shortens downtime.
  • Metal bellows seal: withstands high or very low temperatures, does not use dynamic elastomeric seals.
  • Split seal: can be replaced without removing the pump or motor.

Seal face and gasket materials

Seal faces are typically made of silicon carbide, tungsten carbide, carbon graphite, or ceramic. The auxiliary sealing gasket can be FKM, EPDM, PTFE, or FFKM. The choice of material depends on temperature, corrosion, viscosity, and solid content in the medium.

API 682 standard

For pumps in the oil and gas and petrochemical industries, seals and auxiliary systems are often designed according to API 682 (ISO 21049). This standard regulates the classification, installation configurations, and piping plans for drainage and cooling, aiming to increase the reliability and lifespan of the seal.

How to choose the right mechanical seal

To choose the correct seal, you need to know: pump type and shaft size, rotation speed, pressure and temperature in the seal chamber, composition and viscosity of the medium, solid content, and emission requirements. Providing complete information helps shorten the selection time and avoid incorrect choices.

Reasons for premature mechanical seal failure

  • The pump runs dry or loses the liquid film.
  • Vibration, shaft misalignment, or worn bearings.
  • Incorrect installation or careless handling of the seal face.
  • Solid particles wear, medium crystallization, or evaporation at the seal face.
