Flowserve introduces Gaspac ZE, a line of dry gas seals with integrated isolation technology when the machine is stationary, aiming to eliminate static leakage and eliminate the need for blowdown in intermittently operated compressors.
In intermittently operated pipeline compressors, the gas in the seal chamber typically needs to be vented each time the machine is stopped, and there is still a small leak when the machine is stationary. Many countries aim to reduce methane emissions by 2030, so operators need new solutions.
According to the company, a nitrogen-activated system will press the isolation seal when the machine stops to block leakage, and automatically shut off when the machine is running. The company says the solution achieves zero emissions in a stationary state, eliminates the need for blowdown, saves around 100,000 cubic meters of standard gas per year for each compressor, and reduces total emissions by up to 80%.
The company cites the case of a European gas pipeline operator (OGE) reducing methane emissions by more than 80%. This is data released by the manufacturer, and actual effectiveness depends on the operating regime of each compression station.
