John Crane Type 93AX Coaxial Separation Seal

In June 2025, John Crane announced the Type 93AX coaxial seal, a new generation of dry gas sealing solutions aimed at reducing emissions, increasing reliability, and lowering operating costs.

What is the purpose of a seal

In a dry gas sealing system, the seal is located between the gas seal and the bearing housing. Its function is to prevent process gas from leaking into the bearing housing and to prevent lubricating oil from entering the gas seal, as even a small amount of oil can contaminate the gas seal face.

Types of seals

The labyrinth type is simple but has a higher leakage rate. The segmented carbon ring type is tighter but has a light contact. The non-contacting coaxial dry gas seal type has very low leakage and minimal wear, and the Type 93AX belongs to this third category.

Notable features of Type 93AX

According to the manufacturer, the fault-tolerant design allows the seal to continue operating even in the event of multiple failures. The seal is compatible with John Crane's dry gas seal range and is supported by a network of over 200 manufacturing, sales, and service facilities and 13 turbo service centers in more than 50 countries.

What users should consider

  • Evaluate safety requirements: hazardous or flammable gases require a reliable separation configuration.
  • Check compatibility when replacing old seals.
  • Ensure the separation gas is clean and at the correct pressure.
  • Monitor the separation gas flow to detect early degradation.
